Imagine being plunged into darkness during a fierce winter storm, temperatures plummeting, and no end in sight. That's the reality for thousands in Michigan's Upper Peninsula right now. But here's where it gets critical: Upper Peninsula Power Company (UPPCO) is battling the elements to restore power, and their efforts are nothing short of heroic. As of Wednesday evening, UPPCO crews have already brought light and warmth back to 10,693 customers since the storm hit early that morning. Yet, the fight is far from over. With high winds and heavy snow downing power lines, crews are working tirelessly through the night, reinforced by additional contract teams arriving Thursday morning.
And this is the part most people miss: UPPCO isn’t just fixing lines—they’re prioritizing emergencies and 911 calls, ensuring those in the most dire situations get immediate attention. While they anticipate some outages may persist into the night, they’re in constant communication with county emergency managers to coordinate efforts.
Here’s a crucial reminder: Safety first! If you encounter a downed power line, stay at least 35 feet away and call 911 immediately. Never touch or approach it—even indirectly. To report an outage, UPPCO customers can call (906) 449-2011, email customerservice@uppco.com, or use the online portal at uppco.com.
Now, here’s a thought-provoking question: With extreme weather events becoming more frequent, how prepared are we as a community to handle prolonged outages? Should we invest more in resilient infrastructure or focus on individual preparedness? Let’s discuss in the comments—your perspective matters.
