Bold claim: a government watchdog will investigate the Trump administration’s move to wipe out nearly $8 billion in climate and energy funding, a move that primarily affected blue states. This is the central issue at hand, and the investigation could determine whether process or politics played a role.
The Energy Department’s inspector general’s office will conduct the review, following a request from Democrats. In a letter published by Democratic lawmakers, acting Inspector General Sarah Nelson stated that the audit will examine the department’s procedures for canceling financial assistance and whether those cancellations adhered to established criteria.
However, initiating an investigation does not automatically prove wrongdoing. Lawmakers who opposed the cuts described the decision as politically driven and targeted. Senator Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) welcomed the development, saying the inquiry could address what he describes as explicit political targeting, noting that the Trump administration reportedly signaled in court that the cancellations were meant to punish blue states.
The Hill has sought comment from the Energy Department regarding the probe.
Earlier this year, the department canceled awards totaling about $7.6 billion across 223 projects. Among the most notable cancellations were funding for hydrogen energy hubs in California and the Pacific Northwest. The Pacific Northwest hub, for instance, encompassed red-state Montana alongside blue states Oregon and Washington.
The department’s action followed a public statement by Russell Vought, director of the White House Office of Management and Budget, on the platform X. He declared that the administration was cutting nearly $8 billion in Green New Deal-type funding to advance the Left’s climate agenda, listing the affected states as California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington.
