NFL Draft 2026: Uncovering the Potential of Jacob Rodriguez (2026)

The 2026 NFL Draft: Unlocking the Potential of Jacob Rodriguez

As the Green Bay Packers gear up for the 2026 NFL Draft, the spotlight is often on nose tackle and cornerback positions. However, there's a hidden gem that could shake up their strategy: off-ball linebacker Jacob Rodriguez. This player might just be the Packers' Day 2 target, and here's why.

General Manager Brian Gutekunst has hinted at the need for an off-ball linebacker during the NFL Scouting Combine, especially with the potential departure of Quay Walker in free agency. This opens up an exciting opportunity for the Packers to bolster their linebacker corps, and Jacob Rodriguez could be the perfect fit.

But here's where it gets controversial... Rodriguez's journey is an intriguing one. Starting as a Taysom Hill-esque quarterback with the Virginia Cavaliers, he transferred to Texas Tech as a walk-on and made the bold move to switch positions, becoming a full-time linebacker. And this transformation paid off big time.

In 2025, Rodriguez dominated the field with an impressive 128 tackles, seven forced fumbles, four interceptions, and three touchdowns. Despite his smaller frame at 6'1" and 231 pounds, he possesses exceptional instincts and surprising play strength. He consistently finds the right position, engages with blockers, and makes clean tackles. His athletic ability and instincts also make him a force in coverage, especially when it comes to anticipating and disrupting passing plays.

Despite his on-field success, Rodriguez's overall athleticism was questioned leading up to the Combine. But he silenced the doubters with one of the best performances of any off-ball linebacker, excluding the exceptional Sonny Styles. His Relative Athletic Score (RAS) of 9.23 was largely due to his impressive 40-yard dash time of 4.57 seconds and a vertical jump of 38.5 inches. But it was his agility tests that truly shone, with a remarkable three-cone time of 6.90 seconds and a short shuttle time of 4.19 seconds, both topping the linebacker group.

The most astonishing part? Rodriguez's determination during the three-cone drill. While other players slipped, he persisted, finally completing the drill on his 10th attempt, a testament to his competitive spirit.

The big question now is whether Rodriguez will be available when the Packers make their first pick at 52nd overall. Currently ranked 60th on the consensus board, some teams might overlook him due to his size, but others will undoubtedly be drawn to his competitive toughness and football IQ. His strong athletic testing on Thursday night could push him up the draft board, making him a potential early pick.

As the pre-draft process unfolds, Jacob Rodriguez's name is one to watch. If he's on the board when the Packers are on the clock, it wouldn't be surprising to see them take a chance on this starting-caliber linebacker. The 2026 NFL Draft could be the stage where Rodriguez's potential is truly unlocked.

What do you think? Could Rodriguez be the Packers' secret weapon? Let's discuss in the comments!
