Mercedes' 2026 F1 Car BREAKS COVER! First Shakedown at Silverstone! (2026)

The future of Formula 1 is here, and it's roaring to life at Silverstone. Mercedes has officially unleashed its 2026 F1 car onto the track, marking a pivotal moment in the sport's new technical era. But here's where it gets exciting: this isn't just any shakedown – it's the first time the Brackley-based team has tested its complete 2026 package, from chassis to the newly debuted V6 hybrid engine. And this is the part most people miss: while Alpine, Mercedes' new customer team, had already given the engine a spin, this was the works team's chance to see how all the pieces fit together.

Just hours after the sleek W17 was unveiled on Thursday, George Russell took the wheel, putting the car through its paces on Pirelli’s grooved ‘demo’ tyres. This shakedown was part of Mercedes’ first promotional event day, one of only two allocated annually, allowing teams to clock up to 200km of running each day. Silverstone, conveniently located next to Mercedes’ chassis headquarters in Brackley and its engine department in Brixworth, has long been a favorite for these filming days.

With Mercedes’ run, nearly half of the expanded 11-team grid has now completed shakedowns of their 2026 machinery. Audi kicked things off after taking over the Sauber operation, followed by Cadillac, Racing Bulls, and Alpine. But the real test begins on January 26-30, when the full 2026 field converges on the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for the first official test. Teams will have to choose any three days from this five-day window to run their cars behind closed doors. Two more public tests will follow in Bahrain’s warmer climate in February, open to both media and fans.

Here’s where it gets controversial: Given the massive regulatory overhaul—with chassis and engine rules changing simultaneously for the first time since 2014—the FIA has granted additional testing time. But is this enough for teams to adapt? And will Mercedes, with its unchanged driver lineup of George Russell and F1 sophomore Andrea Kimi Antonelli, be able to challenge McLaren, which dominated using their customer engines in 2025? Mercedes ended last season second in the constructors' standings, ahead of Red Bull and Ferrari, but failed to mount a serious challenge to McLaren.

As the 2026 season looms, questions abound. Can Mercedes reclaim its former glory? Will the new technical regulations level the playing field or create even greater disparities? And what does this mean for the future of F1? We want to hear your thoughts! Do you think Mercedes has what it takes to dominate again, or will the new era crown a different champion? Let us know in the comments below. The Autosport.com Team is all ears!
