The Great Debate: iPhone vs. Android, Utah's Next Big Decision?
In a surprising turn of events, Senator Kirk Cullimore has proposed a bill that could shake up Utah's official symbols. But here's the twist: it's all about mobile operating systems!
SALT LAKE CITY - When the idea of designating Android as Utah's preferred mobile OS was brought up, the Senate chamber erupted. Some senators applauded, while others booed. It was a true spectacle.
"Is this even real?" exclaimed Senator Mike McKell, clearly taken aback.
And yes, it is very real. SB138, sponsored by Senator Cullimore, aims to make Android an official state symbol, joining an eclectic mix of other symbols like the dutch oven, brine shrimp, and porcini mushroom.
Cullimore, an Android loyalist, believes that iPhone users will eventually see the light and realize Android's superiority. "I'm holding strong," he said, being the only Android user in his family.
But here's where it gets controversial: Cullimore jokingly framed his bill as a fight against 'discrimination' from iPhone users, referring to the green text bubbles that Android users send.
While it may seem like a light-hearted joke, this bill is officially listed on the Utah Legislature's website, among hundreds of others. However, Cullimore himself doesn't seem too hopeful about its chances.
"I doubt it will even make it out of committee," he admitted.
This isn't Cullimore's first unusual bill. In 2023, his proposal to celebrate Halloween on the last Friday of October failed to gain traction. When asked if this Android bill was a similar light-hearted proposal, Cullimore was clear: "No, the Halloween bill was serious. It will be back."
And this is the part most people miss: these bills, no matter how light-hearted, spark important discussions. They bring attention to the age-old debate of iPhone vs. Android, and in a state like Utah, that's a big deal.
So, what do you think? Is this bill a clever way to bring attention to a fun debate, or is it a waste of time? Let us know in the comments! We'd love to hear your thoughts on this unique proposal.
