Missing your favorite shows on Fubo? You're not alone! A major programming shakeup has hit the live TV streaming service, and it could impact your viewing experience.
Fubo is currently embroiled in a carriage dispute with NBCUniversal, a media powerhouse that owns a vast portfolio of channels and content, including NBC News, Universal Studios, Peacock, Telemundo, and Illumination.
On November 21st, NBCUniversal made the bold move of pulling all its networks from Fubo. This decision has significant implications, especially for sports enthusiasts who rely on Fubo's sports-focused subscription, launched earlier this year. While sports content from networks like ESPN, CBS, and ABC remains available, the absence of NBCUniversal channels is a notable change.
Fubo didn't stay silent. In a released statement, the streaming service accused NBCUniversal of employing "discriminatory tactics" that are detrimental to its subscribers.
"NBCU is discriminating against Fubo and our subscribers," the statement declared, highlighting that NBCUniversal granted YouTube TV and Amazon Prime the ability to directly integrate Peacock into their channel offerings but denied the same rights to Fubo. But here's where it gets controversial...
Fubo alleges that NBCUniversal is attempting to force a multiyear deal for specific channel packages under Versant, NBCUniversal's new media company. Furthermore, Fubo claims that NBCUniversal is trying to increase the cost of the Fubo Sports subscription by bundling "expensive, non-sports channels" into the agreement. The Versant brands include CNBC, E!, MSNBC, SyFy, and USA, among others.
NBCUniversal has yet to publicly comment on the situation. However, Fubo has stated its willingness to move forward without NBCUniversal content if an agreement cannot be reached, emphasizing its commitment to providing subscribers with a premium, competitively priced live TV streaming experience.
Adding to the complexity, Fubo recently became an affiliate of The Walt Disney Company following its merger with Hulu's live TV platform in October. And this is the part most people miss... It remains unclear whether this merger has influenced the content agreement negotiations with NBCUniversal. Fubo has not provided a comment on this matter.
