Elias Pettersson: Rising Star to Watch in the NHL — Sophomore Season Progress (2026)

Elias Pettersson: Soaring Beyond the Sophomore Slump

It's incredible to think that a player just over 50 games into their NHL journey can already ignite such excitement. Yet, that's precisely the case with young defenseman Elias Pettersson. This article, penned by Chris Faber on December 13, 2025, dives into Pettersson's impressive development in his second season.

Pettersson, at just 21 years old, has clearly demonstrated growth since his rookie season, skillfully avoiding the dreaded sophomore slump by leveraging his strengths. Assistant coach Kevin Dean, who oversees the defense, is full of praise for 'Junior.'

"He's resilient, competes fiercely, and executes instructions flawlessly, which is fantastic. He's also very coachable. We're consistently working on a couple of areas with him, and he's improving," Dean notes. "For him, it's all about practice, gaining more ice time - and some of that falls on me. I'm really pleased with his performance. He's played over 20 games this season and hasn't had many off nights, that's for sure."

Pettersson's average ice time this season is 13:29 per game, with two games exceeding 20 minutes, including a career-high 21:05 on November 14th against the Carolina Hurricanes.

"I feel like I'm improving constantly. I aim to get better every game. Tom [Willander] and I discuss this frequently. We want the coaches' trust. We're young, learning, and striving to improve daily," Pettersson shares.

Pettersson enjoys having fellow young defenseman Tom Willander on the team. Although their playing styles differ, they share much in common in their early NHL careers.

The two young defensemen have played 61:49 of five-on-five ice time together this season, during which they've been on the ice for five goals for and just two goals against. "It's fun playing together. We're young, and we want to earn trust so they can play two young defensemen together. We want to minimize mistakes, play hard, and get more playing time," Pettersson says about playing with Willander.

Overall, Dean is highly impressed with Pettersson's sophomore season performance. He's particularly struck by the young defender's consistent strengths and focus on improvement. He also appreciates Pettersson's eagerness to add penalty killing to his skillset.

Pettersson aims to enhance his penalty-killing abilities, and the experience gained in meetings and games is boosting his confidence in this area at the NHL level.

"I want to keep improving and become a solid defenseman who makes few mistakes," Pettersson states. "I want to be a tough opponent, a trustworthy player who doesn't make many errors. So, I need to keep working hard every day."

Dean is excited to see Pettersson's potential as he gains more experience. He admires Pettersson's strength at such a young age, attributing it to his strong skating skills.

"He's such a good skater, right? I think any player who's a good skater seems to be strong. It's just the way it is. He's an excellent skater. I think he's very strong when he initiates contact. I think he's going to get stronger when he is the one holding the puck," Dean explains.

But here's where it gets interesting... What if Pettersson's rapid improvement isn't just about physical skills? Could his mental approach, his willingness to learn, and his partnership with Willander be the real keys to his success? And this is the part most people miss... the synergy between young players.

There's no doubt that Pettersson has a bright future. What do you think? Are you impressed by his growth? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
