A tale of missed opportunities and a frustrating defeat! The Drake women's basketball team faced a formidable challenge against Minnesota, and their hopes of extending a winning streak were dashed.
In a hard-fought battle at the Knapp Center, Drake's offense sputtered, unable to maintain the momentum from a promising start. The Bulldogs fell to Minnesota 68-43, with the Gophers' size and defensive prowess proving to be a significant hurdle.
But here's where it gets controversial... Despite a solid 19-point first quarter, Drake's scoring dried up, managing just 24 points in the remaining three quarters. No player reached double digits, a stark contrast to their previous victory against Indiana State.
Maggie Taylor, Grace Kuntson, and Abbie Aalsma led the scoring effort, but it wasn't enough to counter Minnesota's dominance in the paint and on the boards. The Gophers outrebounded Drake 40-32 and outscored them 40-16 in the paint, a decisive advantage.
And this is the part most people miss: Drake's shooting percentage took a hit, with a season-low .289 field goal percentage and a paltry .192 from beyond the arc.
Despite efficient passing and assists, Minnesota's defense disrupted Drake's rhythm, and the Bulldogs struggled to find their range.
Head Coach Allison Pohlman summed it up, "A lot of missed opportunities...we just couldn't convert."
So, what do you think? Was it a case of Minnesota's superior defense, or did Drake's offense simply have an off day? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
Drake will look to bounce back in their next Missouri Valley Conference game against UIC on December 29th, aiming to find their consistency and raise their standards.
