A haunting chapter in Bangladesh's history is being unraveled as authorities embark on a solemn mission to exhume a mass grave, believed to hold the remains of over a hundred victims of a tumultuous uprising. This is a story of courage, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of truth.
The Unveiling of a Dark Secret
On a Sunday, Bangladeshi police commenced the delicate process of exhuming a mass grave at the Rayerbazar Graveyard in Dhaka. This grave is thought to contain the unidentified bodies of approximately 114 individuals, victims of a mass uprising that led to the downfall of an autocratic leader, Sheikh Hasina, in 2024.
The United Nations, in collaboration with Argentine forensic anthropologist Luis Fondebrider, is overseeing this critical operation. Fondebrider, with his decades of experience in leading recovery missions at mass graves worldwide, brings invaluable expertise to the table.
A Volunteer's Tale
The bodies were initially buried by a volunteer group, Anjuman Mufidul Islam, who took it upon themselves to handle the unclaimed bodies of those killed during the deadly protests. In July and August of 2024, they buried 80 and 34 bodies, respectively, all reported victims of the violent crackdowns.
The United Nations estimates that up to 1,400 people lost their lives during these crackdowns as Hasina desperately clung to power. These deaths were a significant factor in her conviction for crimes against humanity last month.
Uncertainty and Hope
Criminal Investigation Department chief Md Sibgat Ullah stated that investigators believe the mass grave contains roughly 114 bodies, but the exact number will only be confirmed once the exhumations are complete.
"We can only confirm once we dig the graves and exhume the bodies," Ullah emphasized.
Among those anxiously awaiting answers is Mohammed Nabil, who is desperately searching for the remains of his brother, Sohel Rana, who went missing in July 2024.
"We searched for him everywhere," Nabil shared with AFP. His family's suspicions were initially raised after seeing a Facebook video, and then they recognized Rana's distinctive clothing - a blue T-shirt and black trousers - in a photograph taken by the burial volunteers.
The Long Road to Justice
The exhumed bodies will undergo post-mortem examinations and DNA testing, a process expected to take several weeks. Senior police officer Abu Taleb explained to AFP that extracting DNA from soft tissues after more than a year is challenging, making the process more time-consuming when working with bones.
Forensic experts from four Dhaka medical colleges are part of this dedicated team, with Fondebrider providing crucial support as per an agreement with the UN rights body, OHCHR.
Fondebrider, who previously headed the Argentine Forensic Anthropology Team, emphasized the complexity and uniqueness of this process, assuring that international standards will be strictly adhered to.
A Journey Towards Closure
Authorities have assured that the exhumed bodies will be reburied with dignity, following religious rites and the wishes of their families.
Sheikh Hasina, convicted in absentia and sentenced to death last month, continues her self-imposed exile in India.
