Imagine waking up with no recollection of your past, your family, or even your own name—it's a nightmare that could happen to anyone, and it's the heartbreaking reality Darrell Powell is facing right now. As we dive deeper into Part 2 of this gripping tale, you'll see how one man's lost memories are being painstakingly rebuilt, piece by piece. But here's where it gets truly fascinating: his journey involves a surprising reunion that raises eyebrows and sparks debate. Stick with us as we uncover the latest twists in this mystery.
Darrell Powell, a resident of the Susquehanna Valley, received a diagnosis of amnesia following an incident where he was discovered unconscious in a Florida convenience store. Now, after returning home, he's working tirelessly to reconstruct his forgotten life, relying heavily on support from his ex-wife. John Doe
Powell recounts his initial awareness, saying, 'I recall being wheeled out of the ambulance and into the hospital, which snapped me back to consciousness somewhat. However, the events leading up to that moment are mostly a blank.'
He was found in the restroom of a Wawa store in Orlando on September 8, completely devoid of any form of identification.
'I kept repeating that I didn't know who I was. For about the first week or ten days, they referred to me as John Doe, complete with my hospital wristband,' Powell explained.
Spending over a week in the hospital led to the discovery of a brain aneurysm, coupled with amnesia, effectively erasing his memories of his previous life. Amnesia, for those new to the term, is a condition where a person loses the ability to remember past events, often due to brain injury, and it can vary from temporary to permanent—something doctors are still learning to understand through cases like Powell's.
'They mentioned that I might suddenly recover my memories one morning upon waking, or perhaps through some other means, but they couldn't guarantee it,' Powell shared.
Rekindled connection
Powell's ex-wife, Abi Knaub, has stepped in as his primary link to his history. Authorities used advanced facial recognition technology—a system that compares photos against databases to identify people, much like how your smartphone unlocks with your face—to pinpoint Powell and reach out to Abi. The two had divorced back in 2013.
'Since his parents have passed away and there aren't any other close relatives, they turned to me as the best option,' Knaub noted.
Now, Knaub is dedicated to assisting Powell in rebuilding his sense of self and his recollections. Powell's background includes graduating from Middletown Area High School in 1995 and pursuing a career as a photographer, which, for beginners in understanding amnesia recovery, means rediscovering skills and experiences that might lie dormant in the brain.
Abi's last known information about him placed him residing in Erie.
Powell expresses optimism about his future: 'I'm keeping my hopes up that I can eventually get back on track. Fingers crossed for landing a job and finding a stable place to call home again.'
From a prior update, we learned that Powell had reserved a cruise departing from Miami, lasting from August 3 to August 10 of the previous year.
Another piece of the puzzle?
This is the part most people miss, and it might just blow your mind: a woman hailing from Michigan, who crossed paths with Powell during that very cruise, reached out to News 8 but prefers to stay anonymous.
News 8 facilitated a connection between her and Knaub to shed light on how Powell might have ended up in Orlando. The probe into Powell's situation is still active, and we'll keep you posted on any new breakthroughs as they emerge. And this is where controversy creeps in—could inviting a stranger from a vacation fling into such a sensitive investigation be risky, or is it a necessary step toward closure? It's a point that has divided opinions, with some arguing it's harmless collaboration and others worrying about privacy or ulterior motives.

What do you think about Powell's rekindled relationship with his ex-wife—could it blossom into something more, or is it purely practical? And on a broader note, does amnesia offer a chance for a clean slate, or does it rob someone of their identity forever?
