And this is the part most people miss: Harley, a former Swans CEO, sees this as a classic win-win, despite the critics.
“I think it’s unbelievably important,” Harley said, “and I’m looking forward to the day when we don’t talk about traditional states and non-footy states.” He argues that the Opening Round fills a void in the calendar, leverages available grounds, and gives a massive boost to regions north of the Murray River, where 58% of Australia’s population lives. “If we truly want to be Australia’s game, this is a fantastic initiative,” he added.
But here’s the kicker: the Saints-Magpies clash at the MCG coincides with the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix at Albert Park. Critics argue this dilutes the focus on northern markets. Harley disagrees, pointing to the recent State of Origin game in Perth as proof that fans are hungry for footy, no matter the location. “Big games with big clubs,” he said, “I’m sure everyone will be excited by them.”
Looking ahead, the AFL plans to keep experimenting with fixtures, including the introduction of the Tasmania Devils in 2028. “We’re keen to explore events—whether single games or whole rounds like Gather Round—to grow the game and attract new fans,” Harley explained. He also sees a bright future for State of Origin, citing the sold-out Western Australia-Victoria clash at Optus Stadium as evidence of its appeal. “There’s clearly an appetite,” he said. “Let’s take a breath and assess, but one thing’s certain: it has a place.”
