2025's Top Travel Destinations: Where Did Tourism Boom? (2026)

Did you know that while many regions saw steady travel growth last year, one continent experienced a truly remarkable surge in visitors? It’s an exciting time for global travel, and a recent report sheds light on which destinations are capturing the world's wanderlust!

According to the latest World Tourism Barometer from the United Nations, international tourist arrivals worldwide experienced a healthy four percent increase in 2025. This means that despite ongoing economic pressures like inflation and various global challenges, people are still eager to explore new horizons. In total, the world welcomed approximately 1.52 billion international visitors, which is an impressive 60 million more than in the previous year. This figure not only sets a new record for post-pandemic travel but also highlights the enduring appeal of travel.

But here's where it gets truly fascinating: Africa emerged as the region with the largest growth in tourist arrivals, boasting an impressive eight percent increase! While it may not have the highest absolute numbers compared to Europe or the Americas, this significant jump signals a powerful resurgence for the continent as a travel destination. North Africa, in particular, shone brightly with an 11 percent rise in visitors. Morocco, a major hub for African tourism, saw a fantastic 14 percent increase, welcoming nearly 20 million international guests. Other standout performers in Africa included South Africa with a remarkable 19 percent growth, Ethiopia at 15 percent, Seychelles at 13 percent, and both Tunisia and Sierra Leone experiencing a solid 10 percent increase.

Meanwhile, Europe continued to be the most popular continent for travelers, attracting a massive 793 million visitors. This represents a four percent increase from 2024 and is even six percent higher than pre-pandemic levels in 2019. Within Europe, Iceland experienced the most dramatic surge, with a 29 percent jump in visitor numbers compared to the year before. Talk about a hot destination!

Asia and the Pacific region also saw substantial growth, with arrivals increasing by six percent. Countries like Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives all reported a rise in traveler numbers. This region welcomed a total of 331 million tourists, making it the second-largest destination after Europe.

In the Middle East, tourism grew by three percent. Egypt led the way with the highest growth in arrivals, closely followed by Jordan, Bahrain, and Qatar.

And this is the part most people miss: The Americas, while still a significant destination with 218 million tourists, experienced a more modest one percent growth in arrivals. However, there were some shining stars within the Americas! Brazil saw an astonishing 37 percent increase in visitors, with Curacao, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and Aruba also reporting significant gains.

What’s truly remarkable is that no region experienced a decline or stagnation in tourist numbers. Globally, the tourism sector is estimated to have generated a staggering $2.2 trillion (approximately £1.6 trillion) in export revenues last year. Looking ahead, the UN anticipates international tourism to grow by another three to four percent in the current year.

Here’s a quick recap of the UN’s 2025 findings:

  • World: 1.52 billion international tourist arrivals; four percent growth.
  • Europe: 793.5 million international tourist arrivals; four percent growth.
  • Asia and the Pacific: 331 million international tourist arrivals; six percent growth.
  • Americas: 218 million international tourist arrivals; one percent growth.
  • Africa: 81 million international tourist arrivals; eight percent growth.
  • Middle East: 99.8 million international tourist arrivals; three percent growth.

Now, over to you! Africa’s impressive growth is certainly a talking point. Do you think this trend will continue, and what factors do you believe are driving this surge in interest? Share your thoughts below – we’d love to hear your perspective!
